Best Day Trips from Marrakech : Mountains, Deserts & The Atlantic Coast

Created by Colleen | Updated : 22 March 2025 |

We allowed ten days for our visit to Marrakech and because I’m a planner, I mapped out something to do for every day. We don’t like to rush and we do like to allow for impromptu changes but even so, my plan was in tatters by day three!

Reason one? There is a lot to see and do in Marrakech and way more than we had expected. Reason two? World Cup fever swept through the city — and like everyone else, we were swept along with it and we wouldn’t have missed those celebrations for the world!

But for me at least there were also too many day trips to choose, too many tour options and I hadn’t considered just how vast Morocco is and how much there would be to explore right on our doorstep. In the end, we had to prioritise and save the rest for another visit.

So how do you choose the best day trips from Marrakech? Which ones are worth it and which ones can wait? Read on as we share what we loved, what we missed and what we’re planning to do next time!

Why Take a Day Trip from Marrakech?

If you only have a couple of days in Marrakech, you’ll probably want to soak up the city itself and explore the souks, squares, and sights of the Medina. But if you have an extra day or two the possibility of wandering farther afield is very hard to resist.

If you’re still in the planning stages of your Morocco visit then I recommend adding a few extra days because there is a lot to see and do in Marrakech. And while some of these places take a little effort to reach and you’ll have to cope with a few long drives, the rewards are absolutely unforgettable!

For starters, you can ride a camel in the Sahara, or paddle in the Atlantic at Essaouira, or hike in the High Atlas Mountains, or go visiting UNESCO World Heritage villages that were once vital stages on ancient trade routes.

Our (my) biggest challenge was that it all sounded so exotic and exciting; I wanted to do it all! But time ran away from us, the World Cup came to Morocco and we had to miss a few things. And the tour I most wanted was full! With hindsight I’d say pick the trip that sounds perfect for you and book it before you leave home; we missed out simply because we left it too late!

Our Favourite Day Trips from Marrakech

Look on any tour booking site and you’ll find 100s of day trips from Marrakech.  Many of them are very similar, some offer smaller groups and variations on the same trip. So how do you choose? And how do you pick one day trip over another if you’re short on time?

To help you with your choices, here are the tours we took, or wanted to take and a full breakdown on what each one offers and can add to your trip to Marrakech.

1. Agafay Desert : The Desert on Marrakech’s Doorstep

  • Where: Agafay Desert, around 40km southwest of Marrakech
  • Tour Length: Half-day to full-day options (4–8 hours)
  • Drive Time: Around 45 minutes
  • Typical Departure: Morning, afternoon, or sunset (depending on the tour)
  • Cost Range: €20 – €80 per person (there’s a huge variety and luxury options and extra activities)
  • Includes: Transport, camel or quad bike ride, dinner (if evening tour), some include pool access or yoga but check the small print
  • Extras: Drinks, optional quad biking, camel or horse riding upgrades & tips (depending on the tour you book)
  • Fitness/Access: Mostly easy; camel mounting or quad biking requires a bit of mobility and dexterity!
  • Special Gear: Sunhat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes and clothes, trousers or leggings for the camel ride too.

Why You’d Love This Tour

Unlike the Sahara’s golden dunes, Agafay is a rocky desert. I really love deserts and I will visit them whenever possible and much to Gerry’s dislike, they usually involve a camel-ride! (I don’t think he’s ever forgiven me for the ride in Wadi Rum in Petra.)

We did visit Agafay and indeed had a camel ride and at first we thought it would be a little disappointing or touristy but actually the scenery was wonderful and we enjoyed the visit. This tour is a great option if you want a desert experience without the long drive to the Sahara or you’re short on time.

Traditionally used by Berber shepherds, this barren plateau gives you big skies, glorious sunsets, and a chance to ride that camel or quad bike and is just an hour from the city. Many tours finish with dinner under the stars at one of the desert camps; which is perfect if you’re looking for something different for an evening.

Pros for Agafay Desert

  • Easy half-day trip — no long drives, you can be back in time for dinner or stay for dinner if you prefer.
  • Wide range of experiences — camel rides, quad biking, music, dinner or just relax in camp
  • Stunning at sunset — the sunset is pretty special and on a clear night the stars are amazing
  • Good value if you fancy a desert feel without the full Sahara commitment
  • Option to upgrade to luxury camps — pools, private tents, dinner under the stars but do read the small print

Cons / Things to Know for Agafay Desert

  • It’s not the Sahara — no huge dunes, just rocky barren hills, even when the tour photos suggest you may be getting dunes, you’re not.
  • Can feel touristy — lots of tours run very similar packages with camels and dinner. The prices can vary so ensure you’re not paying too much.
  • Prices vary hugely — double-check what’s really included before booking and compare with other tours
  • Summer can be hot during the day — sunset trips are cooler and more pleasant
  • Quads are not for everyone (us included) and can be dusty and noisy. And if you don’t book in advance they are often full and you can’t switch up when you arrive.

We Love This Agafay Desert Trip with Activities & Dinner

Experience a taste of the desert with camel rides, quad biking and dinner under the stars — just an hour from Marrakech.

2. Ait Benhaddou : A Journey into Morocco’s History

  • Where: Aït Benhaddou, approx. 180km east of Marrakech
  • Tour Length: Full day (11-13 hours)
  • Drive Time: 3.5 hours each way
  • Typical Departure: 7:00 – 8:00 AM
  • Cost Range: €30 – €100 per person (private tours cost more)
  • Includes: Transport, guide, stops at Ouarzazate and Atlas film studios (sometimes)
  • Extras: Entrance fees to film studios / tip for the local guide in the ksar (~50-100 dirhams)
  • Fitness/Access: Some uneven steps in the village which isn’t ideal for those with limited mobility
  • Special Gear: Good walking shoes, hat, water, sunscreen and snacks for the journey

Why You’d Love This Tour

Aït Benhaddou was once a thriving stop on the ancient camel caravan routes from Timbuktu to Marrakech.  It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the most captivating places we’ve visited. We LOVED this tour!

It’s one of the best-preserved examples of earthen Berber architecture in North Africa and our local Berber guide brought this tour to life with his stories of growing up in the village and tales from his Grandmother.

The drive is long but you get to see a fascinating side of Morocco on a day trip.

Pros for Ait Benhaddou

  • Stunning, scenery — perfect for photographers and history lovers
  • Fascinating insight into Morocco’s desert trading past
  • Ouarzazate offers a peek into Morocco’s film industry (Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones)
  • You traverse Tizi n’Tichka Pass through the High Atlas Mountains
  • Excellent Berber guides in the UNESCO village and on our film studio tour
  • For us this really is a must-see day trip from Marrakech

Cons / Things to Consider for Ait Benhaddou

  • The drive is long — it’s a full-on day with hours on winding mountain roads (prone to closures in winter).
  • Tourist crowds — This is a popular trip, because of its history so expect there to be a crowds in busy tourist season.
  • Commercial stops — some tours make optional shopping stops at argan oil co-operatives, go with the flow and enjoy the views!
  • Ouarzazate’s film studios can be underwhelming unless you’re a real movie buff although our guide at the studios was pretty amazing and we really enjoyed our visit.
  • Bring some cash for the Berber guides; they are incredible and worth every cent!
  • Check for filming in Ait Benhaddou which will restrict your access.  It’s rare but does happen so schedule accordingly

3. Atlas Mountains & Valleys : Hikes & Berber Villages

  • Where: Ourika or Imil Valley, High Atlas Mountains, approx. 50–60 km from Marrakech
  • Tour Length: Full day (7–9 hours)
  • Drive Time: Around 1.5 hours each way
  • Typical Departure: 8:30 AM
  • Cost Range: €30 – €70 per person (private tours maybe more)
  • Includes: Transport, local guide, visits to Berber villages, argan co-operative, waterfalls hike (optional)
  • Extras: Lunch in a riverside restaurant or Berber village (~€10-15), tips for the guide, we had lunch in a village house for an extra 7€
  • Fitness/Access: Easy for most depending on the tour; we took the hiking tour and the waterfalls hike is a little uneven and steep.
  • Special Gear: Good walking shoes, layers for changing mountain temps, sunscreen

Why You’d Love This Tour

We knew when we visited Marrakech that hiking in the Atlas Mountains was a must.  So we booked this tour.

The Ourika and Imil Valleys offers one of the easiest ways to escape the city and see Morocco’s rural heart. You’ll pass through traditional Berber villages, see how argan oil is made, and walk beneath those towering mountains that change colour with the sun and the seasons.

We really enjoyed our Argon Oil stop, it felt like a genuine woman’s co-operative and we loved the hiking.  The highlight for many is the Setti Fatma waterfalls — though be warned, the hike can be steeper than expected.

This is also a great way to spend a weekend like a Marrakech local— many escape here in summer for cooler temperatures and a picnic by the river.  So expect it to be busier at the weekend!

Pros for Atlas Mountains & Valleys

  • Gorgeous mountain scenery just a short drive from the city
  • Insight into Berber culture — many tours stop at family homes or co-operatives and our guide was born in the mountains so gave us incredible insight into life here
  • Options to hike or tour by bus – there are options for everyone but read the small print
  • Chance to try riverside dining —although out trip took us to a traditional Berber village for lunch with the family (which was amazing)
  • Cooler temperatures in the mountains — great escape if Marrakech is sweltering and a good choice in spring and autumn

Cons / Things to Know for Atlas Mountains & Valleys

  • Waterfall hike can be tricky — uneven underfoot and steep in places (skip it if unsure) and make sure you don’t book a hiking tour if you’re not into hiking.
  • Some tours push shopping stops at co-operatives — I have to say our visit was really good and added to the day.  Read the reviews on the tour you’re choosing!
  • Gets busy at weekends and holidays — locals love to visit the mountains so maybe avoid a tour on Saturdays and Sundays and stay in the city?
  • Can feel a bit touristy — especially the first few villages along the route but again it depends  on the tour you choose.  Do read the reviews and make sure you’re booking the right tour for you as there are many Atlas Mountain tours. We did not feel ours was overly touristy.
  • There are a lot of tours to choose from so review carefully. We wanted to hike in the Atlas mountains and we certainly did that!

4. Essaouira : Seaside Charm & Fresh Seafood

  • Where: Essaouira, Atlantic Coast, approx. 180 km west of Marrakech
  • Tour Length: Full day (9–10 hours)
  • Drive Time: Around 2.5–3 hours each way
  • Typical Departure: 8:00 AM
  • Cost Range: €20 – €60 per person (private tours more)
  • Includes: Transport, free time to explore the medina, port, and beach
  • Extras: Lunch (fresh fish or seafood recommended), optional visit to an argan co-operative en route or see the goats in the tree!
  • Fitness/Access: Mostly flat and easy walking in town
  • Special Gear: Layers — it’s breezy by the coast, even in summer

Why You’d Love This Tour

Everyone told us that we had to visit Essaouira.  And we will one day but sadly Morocco Vs Spain in Jemma el Fnaa was showing live on a big screen, and watching alongside 20 thousand other football fans meant we had to cancel this tour!

It’s a long drive from Marrakech but everything we’d read says it’s worth the trip as it’s such a contrast from the city.  And the history, culture and way of life beside the sea is also so different

This historic port town, once called Mogador until the 1960s, was an important trading hub, with Portuguese, French, and Berber influences shaping its blue-and-white medina.

Famous for its fortified sea walls, fishing port, and UNESCO-listed medina, Essaouira offers a completely different side of Morocco. Wander the peaceful souks, watch the blue boats unloading their catch, or feast on fresh grilled sardines by the water.

Jimi Hendrix supposedly fell in love with the place in the ‘60s (our neighbours too!) It’s artsy, laid back, and charming and we’re gutted we missed it.  We do know it’s one of the reasons why we want to return one day soon!

Pros for Essaouira

  • Coastal break — cooler temperatures, ocean breeze, and miles of sandy beaches and perfect if you’d love to have a go at surfing!
  • Compact, UNESCO-listed medina — much calmer than Marrakech’s souks and a very different vibe
  • Watch the fishermen and try seafood straight from the sea to the grill
  • Perfect for photographers — the blue boats and sea walls make for a very different feel than other trips in Morocco and great for photos!
  • Ideal too for extended stays if you’d like to spend a night or two by the seaside – this is what we’ll do when we return.  However, if you’re short on time a day trip is the perfect introduction to the Moroccan Atlantic coast.

Cons / Things to Know for Essaouira

  • Long drive for a day trip — you’ll spend 5–6 hours total on the road
  • Windy — nicknamed the Windy City of Africa, so not great for sunbathing but you can have surfing lessons!
  • Tour includes free time — this is perfect if like us you prefer to explore independently but it is light on guiding if that’s what you prefer.
  • Summer is busy : the restaurants can also get busy at lunchtime as this is also a holiday resort so expect it to be crowded

5. Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Marrakech : Sunrise Deserts & Mountains

  • Where: Just outside Marrakech — launch sites vary
  • Tour Length: Half day (4–5 hours total)
  • Flight Time: 45 minutes to 1 hour in the air
  • Typical Departure: Early — pick-up around 5:00 AM for sunrise
  • Cost Range: €140 – €250 per person
  • Includes: Hotel pick-up, flight, breakfast, sometimes a camel ride
  • Extras: Tips for the pilot/crew, photos or videos may be extra
  • Fitness/Access: Must be able to climb into the basket — no seating during flight
  • Special Gear: Layers — it’s cold early, warms up fast; sunglasses, camera

Why You’d Love This Tour

I want to take this tour.  Indeed I want to go up in a hot air balloon but I’m a little scared!  We live in France not too far from where the Montgolfier Brothers flew their balloons and in summer we’ll see them in the sky.

When we were in Africa we had the chance to take a flight over the Okovanga Delta but we didn’t. Next time I will!

There’s something magical about seeing Morocco from above — the colours of the desert, the peaks of the Atlas Mountains, and the patchwork of villages below.  We’ve taken a tiny plane jumping across islands in the Galapagos and a helicopter over Victoria Falls, I know I have to take this tour when we next visit!

Hot air ballooning here isn’t cheap, but read the reviews and everyone will tell you it was the highlight of their trip. The cherry on the cake! Watching the sunrise from above in total silence they say is unforgettable.

Flights usually finish with a traditional Moroccan breakfast in a Berber tent — mint tea, msemen pancakes, and all. What’s not to love!

Pros for the Hot Air Balloon Ride

  • Spectacular views — desert, mountains, and Marrakech in the distance
  • Reviews say this is one of the most memorable experiences you’ll have in Morocco
  • Professional – so many reviews say these are very well-run tours with experienced pilots and they felt very safe.
  • Includes breakfast — again highly praised and that it made for a perfect end to a perfect morning
  • Is not a long tour so you can pair this with another tour later in the day – ideal if you’re short on time

Cons / Things to Know for the Balloon Ride

  • Expensive — it’s a splurge, this is not an inexpensive tour
  • Early start — you’ll be up before dawn so don’t plan a late night!
  • Weather dependent — can cancel if it’s too windy, so bear this in mind and allow some flexibility maybe to reschedule.
  • No seating — standing only in the basket so you’ll need to be a little agile
  • Not if you have a fear of heights (sorry, Gerry!) I’m not the best with heights but I really need to take a balloon ride!

6. Ouzoud Waterfalls : Nature, Views & Barbary Monkeys

  • Where: Ouzoud Falls, Middle Atlas Mountains, approx. 160 km northeast of Marrakech
  • Tour Length: Full day (10–12 hours)
  • Drive Time: Around 2.5–3 hours each way
  • Typical Departure: 8:00 – 9:00 AM
  • Cost Range: €18 – €50 per person (private tours extra)
  • Includes: Transport, local guide at the falls, optional boat ride to the base of the falls
  • Extras: Lunch at a local restaurant (€10), boat ride (€2-3), tip for your guide
  • Fitness/Access: Moderate — path down is uneven, some steps, basic fitness needed
  • Special Gear: Good walking shoes, swimwear if you fancy a dip, sunhat

Why You’d Love This Tour

The Ouzoud Waterfalls are Morocco’s highest — a dramatic 110m drop surrounded by red cliffs and olive groves. This day trip is a proper day in nature — and a nice contrast to the bustle of Marrakech.

This is a really popular day trip from Marrakech and it was on our shortlist but we had to make choices; as you will too unless you have a month in the city!

Hiking was our priority but if it’s not yours then this could be a perfect outing.

The falls are spectacular, especially in spring, and you’ll likely spot Barbary macaques along the way. Many tours include a traditional boat ride to the base of the falls where you’ll get properly splashed (but expect to pay extra for this).

It’s also a popular weekend spot for Moroccan families, which is great as you get to mingle with locals but also means it’s busier at weekends.

Pros for Ouzoud Waterfalls

  • A complete change of scenery — lush greenery, cool spray, and river views
  • Chance to see wild Barbary monkeys in their natural habitat but they are used to tourists so hold on to your belongings and be aware that they are wild animals!
  • Optional boat ride — cheap, cheerful, and a bit of fun but do expect to get wet!
  • Local restaurants serve simple but good tagines and a few other options if you’re looking for something different.
  • Perfect if you need a day away from the city and want to see a different side to Marrakech.

Cons / Things to Know for Ouzoud Waterfalls

  • It’s a long drive — And not always the prettiest of scenery
  • The walk is steep and uneven — wear proper shoes and be sure it’s the right trip for your fitness
  • Can be busy — especially weekends and local holidays
  • This is a popular tour and as such expect a few unnecessary guides along the trail and a few salesmen with authentic wares.
  • This is a tour that is a great addition but only if you have days to spare in your itinerary

7. Three Day Desert Adventure : Sahara Magic & Merzouga Dunes

  • Where: Merzouga, Sahara Desert, near the Algerian border — approx. 560 km from Marrakech
  • Tour Length: 3 days / 2 nights
  • Drive Time: 9–10 hours on Day 1 and Day 3
  • Typical Departure: Early morning on Day 1 (7:00–8:00 AM)
  • Cost Range: €100 – €250 per person (more for luxury camps)
  • Includes: Transport, guide, 2 nights accommodation (1 hotel, 1 desert camp), camel trek, dinners & breakfasts
  • Extras: Lunches, drinks, tips, optional quad biking or sandboarding
  • Fitness/Access: Camel ride can be tough if you’ve back/hip issues
  • Special Gear: Warm layers (desert nights get cold), scarf/sunglasses for sand, power bank

Why You’d Love This Tour

One of my favourite books is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho – in it he talks of adventures across the Moroccan deserts and if I’m honest this Sahara Desert Trip was the main reason we booked our trip to Marrakech. And yet life and events transpired against us and we could not take this tour and for that reason alone, I know that we’ll return.

This trip is the stuff of Moroccan dreams — golden dunes, endless skies, and that feeling of being small under a blanket of Saharan stars. You’ll pass through the High Atlas, stop at Aït Benhaddou, visit palm-filled valleys, and finally reach Merzouga where the dunes rise like waves.

The camel trek at sunset is said to unforgettable — and yes I know that Gerry has said he’ll never ride another camel but there is surely something timeless about crossing the sands as the old caravans once did.

You’ll spend your nights in the desert camp – choose wisely as some are basic, others border on glamping — but whatever you do don’t miss your chance to discover the stillness of the Sahara at night.

Why did we miss this?  We thought as we had ten days we could pick the best days when we arrived; it was November and we thought we’d wait for the weather.  And when we came to pick, it was full!  I cannot tell you how sad I was!

Pros for the Sahara Desert Adventure

  • A classic Sahara experience — camels, dunes, campfire, stars it’s too perfect!
  • Stops at incredible places like Aït Benhaddou and Todra Gorge en route
  • Strong sense of Morocco’s ancient caravan trade routes and desert life
  • Option to upgrade for luxury tents with en-suite and proper beds
  • One of those rare experiences you’ll remember forever; the stars, the silence the vastness of the landscape

Cons / Things to Know for Sahara Desert Adventure

  • Long hours on the road — expect full days of driving but like any overland trip we’ve learned to love the drives and the shifting views
  • Camel ride is beautiful but uncomfortable — especially for backs/hips.  Gerry hates them and he’s ridden a few camels across a few deserts; but there’s just one more for us Ger!
  • Some camps are basic — check what’s included (showers, bedding, toilets) and read the reviews as there are many different variations on this tour and you go get what you pay for!
  • Cold nights — bring layers, even in summer because the deserts really do get cold!
  • Can sell out fast — book early  and don’t be like us, just writing this makes me feel disappointed all over again!

Planning Your Marrakech Day Trips: Tips and What to Know

So there you have the tours that made it to our short list.  So how do you choose?  Especially given there are so many other distractions within the city itself?  We took walking tours and cooking classes and traditional hammams and alongside the football and simply exploring the gardens, and palaces of Marrakech and the souks and the Medina we just ran out of time.

Here are a few other tips that might help you with your planning.

Distances and Travel Times

Marrakech is perfectly placed for exploring, but Morocco is bigger that we thought!  Many of the day trips involve a couple of hours in a minibus— sometimes more. It’s worth knowing what’s realistic in a day and how many of those long trips are you happy to make back to back?

  • Under 2 hours each way: Atlas Mountains hiking, Ourika Valley, Agafay Desert and Hot Air Balloon
  • Over 3 hours: Aït Benhaddou (just about doable), Essaouira, Ouzoud Falls, Merzouga Desert (needs 3 days)

Best Time to Visit Marrakech

  • Spring (March–May) and Autumn (Sept–Nov): We visited in November and December aand the weather was pretty perfect.  Sunny for the most part but not too hot. Layers are needed as it can get cold
  • Summer: Marrakech bakes in the summer but Essaouira on the coast and some of the mountain trips are cooler.  Make sure you come prepared for the weather!
  • Winter: Good for hiking, but high mountain roads may be tricky if there is snow

The desert is cold at night in winter and very hot by day in summer — remember to take layers and plan accordingly.

Should You Book in Advance?

This is the eternal question.  I’m asked this in my Camino group and for travel.  I can only say what we do.  If you know there is something that you really want to do then book.  Make space in your schedule and reserve your spot as you know you’re going.

However, we held off to check the weather and then Morocco did amazingly well in the Football World Cup and our plans changed and the trip I most wanted to do was full!

I don’t regret watching the footie but I know we’ll return to do that desert trip!

Which Marrakech Day Trip Will You Choose?

We love to travel and we found a super cheap flight to Marrakech and decided to go.  We’ve visited Morocco before but never this destination and as we had ten days we felt we could see it all.  How wrong we were!

As well as the huge list of things to see and do in Marrakech itself, it’s also the gateway to the Atlas Mountains and the desert and it’s the land of camel trains and Berbers and trade routes and there really is a great deal to do.

We got swept up in the excitement of it all and ran out of days before we’d seen half of what we planned. But that’s ok because Marrakech is always calling us back and we know we will return; for longer this time too!

Whether you’re drawn to the mountains, the coast, or the desert, there’s a trip here that will be perfect for you.  If you’re only in town for a weekend then stay in the city and explore but if you have time for just one day trip further afield then grab it.  Morocco and the lands around Marrakech surprised us.  Allow a little extra time for wandering. You’ll thank me later.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Whenever you travel, you should have great travel and medical insurance.  None of us expect anything bad to happen, but in the event of an incident, you want to be sure that your insurance will cover you.

I’ve ended up in hospital in Peru, Indonesia, Portugal, Japan and Ireland. Every time my insurance took care of everything. I would never leave home without full and comprehensive insurance.

MondialCare : Due to increasing limitations, mainly due to age, we have recently switched to MondialCare for our travel insurance. We have taken an annual policy at a very reasonable cost that includes medical and other travel cover. There are no trip length limits and the upper age for cover is 84. For Camino walkers and travel in Europe they have a low cost Schengen policy with no age limit.

TrueTraveller : We have used this policy and were very happy with the cover, especially considering our ages and pre-existing conditions.

Globelink: We have used and recommended Globelink for years and not heard of any issues. They are a great choice for European and UK Residents.

Genki : This is an EU based company offering long term policies for nomads and travellers. Their monthly rates are very competitive for longer trips too.
