Which Camino Is Best & How To Choose Your Route to Santiago de Compostela

Camino Planning Workshop – Module 2

Created by Colleen | Updated : 30 August 2025 | ,

Youโ€™ve decided you want to walk the Camino โ€” but which route is best for you?

  • Which is the most beautiful?
  • Which is the easiest?
  • Which is the shortest?

Iโ€™ve walked 23 Caminos alongside hundreds of pilgrims and Iโ€™ve used all that experience to develop a simple technique to help ensure that your first Camino is the right choice for you.

Each route has its own charm, it’s own rewards and challenges. The magic lies in finding the one that fits you best โ€” and thatโ€™s exactly what this workshop will help you do.

What Youโ€™ll Learn in This Workshop

There are many recognised Camino routes across Spain and Europe, each with their own ancient history and each with a very different flavour. But which is right for you?

My workshop, removes the guesswork and helps bring some clarity with facts and figures about each route from pilgrims whoโ€™ve already walked. You’ll see that your choice of Camino isnโ€™t about โ€œgetting it rightโ€ โ€“ but about choosing a Camino that matches your needs, your hopes, aspirations and your practical limits.

  • Explore the different Camino routes โ€“ Learn about the different paths across Spain, Portugal and France. Their history, their names and what makes each one special.
  • Facts matter โ€“ Compare distance, terrain, services, weather, and crowds on some of the more popular routes.
  • The Routes Into Santiago de Compostela : The last 100 kilometres for each Camino into Santiago
  • Visualise your Camino โ€“ My own signature exercise that shows you what you truly want from your journey.
  • Find a route that fits your lifestyle โ€“ find the route that best fits your time, comfort, fitness level, and travel style.
  • Budget and beds โ€“ Are you a bunkrooms or  private room person? Weโ€™ll talk accommodation and costs and the options available on different routes
  • Compostela Rules : What are the facts about obtaining your Compostela and where can you find the official rules

Why Choosing the Right Camino Matters โ€” and Why You Should Take This Workshop

When I first walked, I thought there was only one Camino. And I wasnโ€™t alone. Most first-time pilgrims say theyโ€™re walking the Camino de Santiago, but what they really mean is the Camino Frances.

Since my first walk, some routes have really grown in popularity, especially the trails through Portugal and the shorter Camino Ingles – others remain tranquil and the road less walked. The variety is incredible and for many first-time pilgrims, that choice can feel overwhelming.

The route you choose sets the tone for your entire Camino experience. Are you looking for

  • Solitude or connection?
  • Coastal breezes or mountain air?
  • A gentle pace or a physical challenge?
  • Cafรฉs every few kilometres โ€” or walk for hours with only your thoughts and birdsong?

Your Camino can be all of thatโ€ฆ but the route you pick shapes it from the start. And thatโ€™s where this workshop comes in.

Instead of wading through hours of online opinions and forum threads, youโ€™ll get a clear, realistic look at your options โ€” from a pilgrim whoโ€™s walked these paths and guided many others along them.

Weโ€™ll explore time, terrain, crowds, comfort, seasons, and your personal motivations. And youโ€™ll take part in my visualisation exercise to help you uncover what you truly want from this journey.

When we’re done, you wonโ€™t just know whatโ€™s out there โ€” youโ€™ll know which Camino is calling your name.

Why Trust Me With Your Camino Planning Advice?

Iโ€™ve read some fabulous Camino blogsโ€ฆ and some questionable advice too. But when youโ€™re short on time how to you choose, where do you start and how do you sort the wheat from the chaff or know who to trust?

Well my workshops are the advice that Iโ€™d give my friends โ€“ and hereโ€™s why you can trust me!

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Whenever you travel, you should have great travel and medical insurance.  None of us expect anything bad to happen, but in the event of an incident, you want to be sure that your insurance will cover you.

Iโ€™ve ended up in hospital in Peru, Indonesia, Portugal, Japan and Ireland. Every time my insurance took care of everything. I would never leave home without full and comprehensive insurance.

MondialCare : Due to increasing limitations, mainly due to age, we have recently switched to MondialCare for our travel insurance. We have taken an annual policy at a very reasonable cost that includes medical and other travel cover. There are no trip length limits and the upper age for cover is 84. For Camino walkers and travel in Europe they have a low cost Schengen policy with no age limit.

TrueTravellerย : We have used this policy and were very happy with the cover, especially considering our ages and pre-existing conditions.

Globelink: We have used and recommended Globelink for years and not heard of any issues. They are a great choice for European and UK Residents.

Genki : This is an EU based company offering long term policies for nomads and travellers. Their monthly rates are very competitive for longer trips too.
