Helicopter Ride Over Victoria Falls : Is It Worth It?

Created by Colleen | Updated : 3 September 2024 |

We had four days in Victoria Falls at the start of our Africa Overland adventure. It was our first visit to the continent, and we weren’t sure if we’d ever have the chance to return, so were determined to experience the falls from every angle!

We took a walking tour around the falls, getting up close to the cliffs, rainbows, and rainforest ecosystems on the edge of Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke that Thunders. We cruised along the mighty Zambezi River, watching the wildlife that make their home along its banks as the sun set over Zambia; and it was spectacular.

Despite the cost, we also decided to take the helicopter ride over Victoria Falls. Was it worth it? We think so. But before we booked, we had a hundred questions; read on, as we’ve answered most of them below!

Is The Helicopter Ride Over Victoria Falls Worth The Cost?

Absolutely! While the cost is not insignificant, the experience is truly worth it.

We had never been in a helicopter before, and the thrill of flying over the falls and seeing the viewpoints we had walked was incredibly special. Seeing Victoria Falls from above offers a perspective that simply cannot be matched by any ground view. We were especially glad we took the walking tour first, as it enriched the flight experience.

For us, it was an unforgettable adventure that justified every penny.

How Much Does The Helicopter Ride Cost?

The cost of a helicopter ride over Victoria Falls varies depending on the flight duration and time of year. Flights typically last 12–13 minutes or 25–26 minutes.

  • The shorter flight generally costs around €150 to €185 per person
  • The longer 25-minute flight can cost up to €300 per person.
  • Private flights are also available, costing around €600 as you effectively pay for each seat.

Prices may fluctuate based on season and operator, but these serve as a good guide. We booked through Viator for €125.

Are There Hidden Costs?

While there aren’t hidden costs as such, there are some additional expenses to be aware of.

  • All passengers must pay a fuel and tax duty, currently around €25 per person, which is clearly stated when booking.
  • You can also purchase a video of your flight for an extra €40; we chose not to, but others found it worthwhile.

Our tour included hotel pickup, but check the small print to ensure transfers are covered. Prices between tours are similar, so we chose the Viator option, which had the highest ratings across several platforms.

How Long Is The Helicopter Ride?

The flight itself is brief but allow a few hours for the entire process.

  • We were collected from our hotel, with a few stops to pick up other passengers.
  • Upon arrival, we registered, paid additional fees and we were weighed.
  • We waited with a coffee while groups were organized.
  • Flights are usually 12-13 minutes unless you opt for the extended flight.

We found the shorter flight perfect, but the longer option offers more time for photography and broader views. Ultimately, we got to fly over Victoria Falls and we were thrilled

What Is The difference Between The 12  and 25 Minute Flight?

The longer flight circles the falls more and includes parts of the Zambezi River and Batoka Gorge, offering wider views and chances to spot wildlife. Some reviews suggest the extra time may not add significant value unless you’re keen on photography. For most, the shorter flight is sufficient.

Looking for the greatest African Overland Experience? We travelled from Victoria Falls to Cape Town on quite possibly one of the greatest tours we’ve ever taken.

If you think this kind of tour is too much for you then think again.

What Do You See That Is Different From The Walking Tour Or Sunset Cruise?

The view from above almost ties together everything that you’ve seen so far.

While we experienced the falls from the various lookouts on the walking tour, the Zambezi River and the Look-out café and even the Bamba Train, only from the helicopter could we truly grasp the sheer size and power of Victoria Falls.

You also get a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding area, with its gorges and lush landscapes; a perspective that’s not attainable from the ground or on the water.

How Far In Advance Should You Book A Helicopter Tour?

We booked our flight at the last minute without any issues, but it was the quiet season at Victoria Falls. If you’re visiting during peak season or you have limited time, it’s wise to book your preferred time slot well in advance to avoid disappointment.

What Happens If The Weather Is Bad On The Day Of Your Flight?

If the weather is poor and the flight is postponed, operators usually offer a rescheduled timeslot or a full refund. Be sure to check the small print of your booking, especially if you’re short on time and need to secure a refund rather than reschedule.

What To Expect During The Helicopter Ride Over Victoria Falls

We had never taken a helicopter flight before, so I was both excited and a little apprehensive. But once seated, any nerves vanished, replaced by excitement.

Before the flight, we were briefed on safety and procedures and we followed the attendants to the helicopter, taking our seats one by one. The entire process was simple; just follow instructions, with guidance every step of the way.

Our flight had four passengers, each with a window seat. The pilot greeted us and checked that we could hear through our headphones. Our pilot was Spanish, so I cheerfully bid him “Buenos Días” and we chatted briefly about the Camino de Santiago before take-off!

Can You Take Photos Or Videos During The Helicopter Ride?

Yes! I took a lot of photos and videos and the pilot ensures everyone gets a great view of the falls from their window.

Top Tips:  1.Make sure your camera or smartphone has a secure strap and 2. If using a smartphone, switch to wide-angle mode and hold it against the window to avoid reflections spoiling your shots.

Do You Get A Good View Of The Falls?

Yes, absolutely! I initially worried we were on the wrong side and wouldn’t get a turn, but patience is key; the pilot makes two circles so both sides of the helicopter get the perfect bird’s-eye view.

The panoramic view is unbeatable; you’ll see the falls from multiple angles, and on a clear day, you might even spot some wildlife or boats from the sunset cruise!

Is It Scary? I Don’t Like Heights

Neither Gerry nor I are fans of heights, but the ride felt remarkably smooth and the views were so captivating that we quickly forgot our fears. The pilot’s commentary helped along with chatting with our fellow passengers, all adding to the fabulous experience.

What Should I Take With Me?

You don’t need to bring much as bags aren’t allowed in the helicopter. There is a storage area for bags, but it’s neither locked nor attended, so avoid bringing valuables. We were asked to bring our passports for an ID check upon arrival and kept them with us during the flight.

Sunglasses and a camera are recommended. Wear something loose and comfortable and opt for flat shoes as you’ll need to step up into the helicopter.

What’s The Best Time Of Year To See Victoria Falls?

The falls are at their fullest between February and June, but this can create more spray and mist. Some say visiting during the dry season offers clearer views. We visited at the end of May and felt the conditions were perfect — plenty of water flowing over the falls with just enough mist for clear views.

The weather was ideal during our flight, allowing for uninterrupted views of the falls, the water, and even rainbows forming in the spray.

What Is The Best Time Of Day For A Helicopter Ride Over The Falls?

Early morning or late afternoon is ideal for softer, more photogenic light. The golden hours provide excellent contrast and highlight the falls’ beauty, but there are other things to consider:

  • Pros: Beautiful lighting for photos.
  • Cons: Morning flights can be mistier, these times are popular and booking ahead is essential, and timing must fit with your other plans.

I would have loved to see the falls at sunset, but with a Zambezi cruise, theatre tickets for Simunye, and dinner at Dusty Roads Township Experience, our schedule was packed. It’s a balancing act; prioritise what matters most!

What Is The Safety Record Of Helicopter Tours Over Victoria Falls?

We chose Chikopokopo Helicopters based on their numerous 5-star reviews, but safety was a key concern for us.

Chikopokopo Helicopters adheres to strict safety protocols, including multiple safety briefings, seat belt requirements, and detailed boarding instructions. Staff are on hand to ensure everything goes smoothly, and the company complies with local aviation regulations that align with international standards.

Their excellent reviews highlight the professionalism and competence of their pilots and crew. For more details, you can check their safety page.

Are There Weight Restrictions For Helicopter Rides Over Victoria Falls?

I was thrilled to be weighed (not really!), but thankfully, we were both well under the limit, and it was done discreetly. Weight restrictions do apply and typically vary by operator, with a common limit around 120 kg per person. Some companies may charge extra if the total weight exceeds this limit.

Top Tip: Seat allocation is based on the overall weight distribution of the flight. We travelled with two solo passengers, one quite small older gentleman and another rather large chap.  Our guess is that the two solo guys kind of cancelled each other out weight wise.  But you have no say in the seating arrangement; it’s all about balancing the helicopter!

How Many People Can Fit In A Helicopter For A Victoria Falls Tour?

Most helicopters accommodate up to 5 passengers. On our flight, there 4 in the cabin and 1 beside the pilot.

Seat allocation is determined strictly by weight and balance, so you won’t have a choice in where you sit. Some helicopters may have an additional middle seat in the cabin, depending on the size.  You may want to check this as I would not have wanted to sit in the middle seat without a window.

Top Tip: Children under two will need to sit on a parent’s lap.

Environmental Concerns With Taking A Helicopter Ride Over Victoria Falls

It’s important to acknowledge the environmental concerns associated with flights over the falls, including:

  • Carbon Emissions from flights, which contribute to climate change. Short flights have a higher emissions-per-passenger ratio.
  • Noise Pollution that can disturb wildlife, causing stress or changes in behaviour.
  • Impact on Local Ecosystems from increased human activity.

Recognizing these impacts, the National Park Management in Zambia and Zimbabwe developed a sustainability plan in October 2023. Measures include limiting flight numbers, creating safe corridors for wildlife, adjusting flight heights, and relocating helipads to minimize disturbance.

Alongside these measures they recognise that tourism also provides vital funding for conservation efforts and local jobs, creating a delicate balance. As tourists, it’s essential to support sustainable practices and carefully choose tours that contribute positively.

Did We Think A Helicopter Ride Over Victoria Falls Was Worth It?

Absolutely! Experiencing our first helicopter flight over one of the world’s great wonders was truly special.

It was a thrilling, unforgettable treat that was worth every penny. The excitement, the unparalleled views and the unique perspective made this one of the highlights of our trip. Yes, it was pricey, but we have no regrets.

If you’re visiting Victoria Falls, this is a must-do experience that adds a whole new dimension to your African adventure.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Whenever you travel, you should have great travel and medical insurance.  None of us expect anything bad to happen, but in the event of an incident, you want to be sure that your insurance will cover you.

I’ve ended up in hospital in Peru, Indonesia, Portugal, Japan and Ireland. Every time my insurance took care of everything. I would never leave home without full and comprehensive insurance.

TrueTraveller : We have this policy and are very happy with the cover, especially considering our ages and pre-existing conditions.

Globelink: We have used and recommended Globelink for years and not heard of any issues. They are a great choice for European and UK Residents.

Genki : This is an EU based company offering long term policies for nomads and travellers. Their monthly rates are very competitive for longer trips too.

Safety Wing : Many of my travelling buddies from the USA recommended Safety Wing; we’ve not used them personally but know folks who have.
