My Camino Packing List: After More than 10 Years of Walking

Camino Planning Workshop – Module 6

Created by Colleen | Updated : 30 August 2025 | , ,

So what should you actually include on your Camino packing list?

On my first Camino, I read every forum and blog post I could find โ€” and still managed to buy unnecessary gear. Half of it never made it to St Jean, and more was left behind along the way.

The truth is, most pilgrims overpack and overthink. When I walked 1,000 kilometres from Seville, I learned a valuable lesson after a shopping spree: Take what you need, not what you want.  Your feet โ€” and your back โ€” will thank you for it.

Packing for the Camino isnโ€™t always cheap, but you can make smart choices and save money. My workshop will pay for itself in savings and more importantly, you’ll feel confident that youโ€™ve packed what you need to take you to Santiago de Compostela.

What Youโ€™ll Learn in This Workshop

  • Workshop Costย : $9

Weโ€™ll go through everything and itโ€™s both me and Gerry this time because we donโ€™t pack the same way! He takes different things, solves different problems, and has a completely different relationship with his gear.

My workshop will never be the โ€œultimateโ€ packing list because there is no such thing!

Instead, weโ€™ll show you what works for us, what hasnโ€™t, and why โ€” from backpacks and boots to tape and toothpaste. Weโ€™ll talk about the gear weโ€™ve tested, tweaked, and left behind too.

The Basics

  • Whatโ€™s in my bag โ€” and Gerryโ€™s โ€“ whatโ€™s different and what we share
  • Clothing: what you actually need, how to pack light, and where to find a bargain
  • Day packs vs. full backpacks โ€” and which one makes sense for you
  • Sleeping gear: liners, lightweight bags, and how to stay warm without overpacking
  • Toiletries: what we take, what you really donโ€™t need, and tips for shared bathrooms
  • Laundry tips: beyond a few pegs and some soap!

Footwear & foot care

  • Boots vs. trail runners vs. sandals โ€” and what might work for you
  • Footcare and blister prevention kit โ€” how we manage without spending a fortune
  • Socks, insoles and a few footcare mistakes I’ve made so you donโ€™t have to

Seasons, weather & staying dry

  • Packing for the seasons โ€” staying cool, warm, and dry (sometimes all on the same day!)
  • Waterproofing your gear without spending a fortune
  • Staying hydrated โ€” bladders, bottles, and electrolyte tips

Comfort & care on the Camino

  • Whatโ€™s in our first aid kits โ€” what works, what doesnโ€™t, and what we leave behind
  • Managing medication โ€” how I cope and what documents to bring
  • Sleep kits: coping with the snoring, and is a mask worth it
  • The extras I never want to lose or leave home without โ€” and why

Practical & money-saving tips

  • How to avoid overpacking (I leave home with a 6kg bag โ€” and you can too!)
  • Buying gear online โ€” and how to shop smart
  • Creating Your Own Packing list and yes, I really do weigh everything with kitchen scales!

Do You Want Our Packing Tips? Then Take This Workshop!

Because packing is the one thing every single pilgrim worries about.

Gear for the Camino is expensive โ€” and internet shopping can be overwhelming.  Youโ€™ll see conflicting advice, and experts whoโ€™ve walking once or twice and never with groups or in different seasons.

I have been where you are.  Iโ€™ve walked in the heat of summer and in the cold of December and led 100s of pilgrims across different trails.  I know what works and what doesnโ€™t.

I know this workshop will save you:

  • Wasted money on gear youโ€™ll never use
  • Wasted time reading post after post and still feeling confused
  • Wasted energy carrying โ€œjust in caseโ€ items that only slow you down

And more importantly โ€” itโ€™ll help you walk lighter. So come see whatโ€™s in our bags โ€” and walk away knowing exactly what should be in yours.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Whenever you travel, you should have great travel and medical insurance.  None of us expect anything bad to happen, but in the event of an incident, you want to be sure that your insurance will cover you.

Iโ€™ve ended up in hospital in Peru, Indonesia, Portugal, Japan and Ireland. Every time my insurance took care of everything. I would never leave home without full and comprehensive insurance.

MondialCare : Due to increasing limitations, mainly due to age, we have recently switched to MondialCare for our travel insurance. We have taken an annual policy at a very reasonable cost that includes medical and other travel cover. There are no trip length limits and the upper age for cover is 84. For Camino walkers and travel in Europe they have a low cost Schengen policy with no age limit.

TrueTravellerย : We have used this policy and were very happy with the cover, especially considering our ages and pre-existing conditions.

Globelink: We have used and recommended Globelink for years and not heard of any issues. They are a great choice for European and UK Residents.

Genki : This is an EU based company offering long term policies for nomads and travellers. Their monthly rates are very competitive for longer trips too.
