A Day on the Camino & What It’s Really Like To Walk

Camino Planning Workshop – Module 5

Created by Colleen | Updated : 30 August 2025 | ,

Of all the questions you want to ask, what you really want to know is Whatโ€™s it really like to walk the Camino? At least it was for me. I didnโ€™t want to spoil the surpriseโ€ฆ but I did want the reassurance that it was going to be OK!

This workshop isnโ€™t really about the walking โ€” itโ€™s about what happens in-between the walking. The early mornings, the coffee stops, the friendships, the snores, the blisters, washing your undiesโ€ฆ and the emotional wobbles.

Iโ€™m going to walk you through a day on the Camino โ€” from that first morning rustle to your well-earned glass of wine at dinnerโ€ฆ and getting back to the dorm before lights out.

What Youโ€™ll Learn in This Workshop

  • Workshop Cost : 9$

Before I walked my first Camino, I had so many questions. Some I asked on forums โ€” but others felt a bit too personal. (Likeโ€ฆ what are albergue bathrooms really like and are the showers really mixed!?)

I no longer remember how many Camino days Iโ€™ve walked or how many first time pilgrims I’ve walked with. But I do know what they worry about and I can answer those questions and help put your mind at rest.

  • When and how pilgrims really start the day: Should you expect headlamps and rustling backpacks? What about bag transfers?
  • The cafรฉ culture: Where do you find breakfast, & what is breakfast in Spain, and is the coffee really that good?
  • Pacing your walk and listening to your body: When to start, how to walk with others (or alone), and how to pace yourself. Plus tips for foot care, hydration, and rest stops.
  • Lunch or second breakfast? How to manage food on the road and when to eat.
  • Food and special diets: What to expect if you’re veggie, gluten-free, or have food sensitivities.
  • What happens when you arrive: Choosing between albergues and hotels, check-in times, and what to expect.
  • Albergue routines: Showers, laundry, safety, charging devices, and finding a little peace and quiet.
  • Albergue showers and bathrooms: My biggest concern was protecting my modesty (yes, Iโ€™m an English rose and weโ€™re not good at public displays!). Thankfully, it was much better than expectedโ€ฆ most of the time.
  • Hotel life: Laundry, connections and comfort โ€” plus how to manage both worlds.
  • Food and pilgrim dinners: Spanish mealtimes, communal menus, and making friends over wine and lentils. Are pilgrim menus worth it?
  • Sleeping well: Shared dorms, snoring, window wars, bugs, and how to survive a night with strangers โ€” and maybe even sleep!
  • Albergue etiquette: Not everyone follows the rules, but here are a few that will make life happier for everyone.
  • Emotional Days : How to deal with the days where youโ€™re sad, or homesick, or lonely, or hurting or you just donโ€™t like the Camino anymore!

Curious About The Reality – Then You Should Take This Workshop

Before my first Camino, I skipped St Jean and started in Roncesvalles.  A week before I left home fear set in and I started doubting myself.  Iโ€™d read so much online that I lost confidence in myself and my training.

Fear of the unknown is your enemy and my workshop will show you what a typical day really looks like.  And I know Iโ€™m repeating myself โ€” but knowledge is power!

And that mountain I skipped? I went back a few months later and walked it just because I knew I could and Iโ€™ve walked it another 8 times since!

This workshop gives you:

  • A clear, honest picture of daily life on the Camino โ€” warts and all
  • Answers to awkward questions (bathrooms, snoring, safetyโ€ฆ)
  • Encouragement and practical tips you wonโ€™t find in the guidebooks
  • The confidence to say: Yes, I can do this.

Why Trust Me With Your Camino Planning Advice?

Iโ€™ve read some fabulous Camino blogsโ€ฆ and some questionable advice too. But when youโ€™re short on time how to you choose, where do you start and how do you sort the wheat from the chaff or know who to trust?

Well my workshops are the advice that Iโ€™d give my friends โ€“ and hereโ€™s why you can trust me!

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

Whenever you travel, you should have great travel and medical insurance.  None of us expect anything bad to happen, but in the event of an incident, you want to be sure that your insurance will cover you.

Iโ€™ve ended up in hospital in Peru, Indonesia, Portugal, Japan and Ireland. Every time my insurance took care of everything. I would never leave home without full and comprehensive insurance.

MondialCare : Due to increasing limitations, mainly due to age, we have recently switched to MondialCare for our travel insurance. We have taken an annual policy at a very reasonable cost that includes medical and other travel cover. There are no trip length limits and the upper age for cover is 84. For Camino walkers and travel in Europe they have a low cost Schengen policy with no age limit.

TrueTravellerย : We have used this policy and were very happy with the cover, especially considering our ages and pre-existing conditions.

Globelink: We have used and recommended Globelink for years and not heard of any issues. They are a great choice for European and UK Residents.

Genki : This is an EU based company offering long term policies for nomads and travellers. Their monthly rates are very competitive for longer trips too.
